Chandannagar Museum, also known as Institut de Chandernagore, was established at Dupleix House. This house was the former official residence of Chandannagar’s French Governor. The Treaty of Cession of Chandernagore was in 1951. In 1952, the Government of India established a Cultural Institute under the Ministry of External Affairs. Its name is ‘Museum and Art Gallery. It preserves relics from the 250-year French colonial history and symbolizes the shared heritage of both nations.

The Museum was established with a core collection based on the gifts of Harihar Sett (an antiquarian and the first President of the Free City of Chandernagore), a social reformer, and philanthropist. In 1934, he was awarded Chevalier de la Legion D’Honneur by the French Government. 

Chandannagar Museum houses a rare collection of French antiques. These include cannons that were used in the Anglo-French wars (popularly called the Carnatic wars), personal belongings and furniture made from wood dating back to 18th-century France. They are hard to find elsewhere in the world. The exhibits include Dupleix’s personal items, including a marble bust and relics from Chandannagar’s colonial and local history.
